If you are between the ages of 6 and 18 years and want to learn how to be physically fit and eat smarter, welcome to our website! Here are some questions that a lot of kids like you ask us. If you have others, you can ask your parents to send us an email at: info@greatmoves.com
What is Great Moves!?
Great Moves! is a family-based, medically-supervised program for building healthy lifestyles. Kids and parents in the program learn how to be healthy through choosing the right foods to eat, being physical active and developing a positive attitude.
How does it work?
Each week for six months, you meet in groups with other kids your age or with your family for instruction in physical activity, nutrition and behavior change. One week each month is an optional session. Three times during the program, you will also see one of our pediatricians for a medical assessment and followup-up monitoring.
How much weight will I lose?
That depends. The goals of the program will vary depending on your age, your weight and whether there are any medical complications. Some kids might need to lose weight gradually, while the focus for others may be on stabilizing their weight. That’s OK, since kids are still growing. If you grow taller but your weight remains the same, that’s still considered success! The nutrition portion of our program is designed to help you enjoy and prepare different types of tasty and healthy foods. In our physical activity program, you will learn how to find fun ways to stay active using things like Dance Dance Revolution. By following a healthy lifestyle, a healthy body weight will naturally follow over time.
Will you make me do sit ups or run a mile?
No. All of our physical activity classes are fun and non-competitive. Your progress throughout the program will be gradual and sometimes slow, but if you stick with it you will definitely see an improvement in your ability to be physically active.
Will I have to change what I eat?
If you want to achieve a healthier body weight, you will probably have to change some of your eating habits. But that doesn’t mean eliminating all of the foods that you like; it may mean just learning to eat less of the unhealthy foods and more of the healthier ones! As part of the program you will learn to enjoy and make healthier foods that also taste great!
